Things I've found so far that need done beyond the steps - hizzuh it works!

1) /etc/hosts needs HPTouchPad or whatever your device name is added to localhost or sudo doesn't work properly

2) you need to copy /lib/modules/2.6.35-palm-tenderloin into /lib/modules chroot before installing netbook edition

3) after installing all packages from netbook apt command you need to also install hal using apt-get

everything else seems to work and I am now in ubuntu netbook edition.
